Abstract

Lubricating compositions comprise a lubricating oil plus an aminophosphonate of the general formula <FORM:0899101/III/1> where R1 and R2 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl groups, R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl group, and R4 is hydrogen, or an alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group, or may together with R3 be part of a ring which apart from the nitrogen atom is made up of hydrocarbon groups or hydrocarbon groups and a second hetero atom. The preferred base oil is a synthetic oil preferably a diester of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid. Preferred amino phosphonates are dibutyl amino phosphonate, dibutyl butylamino phosphonate and dibutyl cyclohexylamino phosphonate. Many others are listed. The compositions may also contain antioxidants, e.g. phenothiazine and copper deactivators, e.g. quinizarin.
