Abstract

Lubricating oil compositions, particularly suitable as switch oils, transformer oils and turbine oils comprise a lubricating oil and minor proportions of (a) a secondary aromatic mono-, di- or poly-amine in which the nitrogen atom is attached directly to two aromatic radicals; and (b) a compound having the formula <FORM:0810741/III/1> where R1 and R2 are alkyl, aryl or alicyclic radicals or may together form part of a ring; R is CH2, R4CH3 or R4.CH2R5, where R4 and R5 are hydrocarbon radicals; and R3 is an alkyl, aryl or alicyclic radical. The preferred lubricating oils are naphthenic mineral oils with a viscosity of 85 to 200 seconds Redwood I at 70 DEG F. but other mineral oils and synthetic oils, e.g. di (2-ethyl hexyl) sebacate may also be used. The amines may carry alkyl, aryl or etherified hydroxyl substituents in the aromatic ring. Examples of suitable amines are phenyl alpha or beta naphthylamine; xylyl beta naphthylamine; n-heptyl-, pp1-dioctyl-, or p-isopropoxy - diphenylamine; diphenylamine; and N,N1-diphenyl-p-phenylene diamine. Examples of additive (b) include n-butyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate; n-butyl (di-n-butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate; n-butyl (di-isopropyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate; isopropyl (di-n-butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate; 2-ethyl hexyl (cyclo-pentamethylene dithiocarbamyl) acetate; and n - butyl - alpha - (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) isobutyrate. Additives (a) and (b) may each comprise 0.01 to 1 per cent weight of the composition and the ratio of (a) : (b) should be between 3 : 1 and 1 : 3, preferably 1 : 1. Optional ingredients mentioned are mercaptoarylene thiazoles and derivatives thereof capable of dissociation into free radicals, e.g. 2-mercapto-benzothiazole, benzothiazole disulphide and hydroxymethyl thiobenzothiazole and additives having the formula <FORM:0810741/III/2> where R1 and R2 are hydrocarbon radicals and may form part of a ring and X is S, O, or NH, e.g. 3 - piperidinomethyl - 2 - benzothiazolinethione and 3 - morpholinomethyl - 2 - benzothiazolinethione. Examples comprise mineral oils and (i) 0.1 per cent wt. each of phenyl beta naphthylamine and n-butyl (dimethyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate; (ii) 0.05 per cent wt. each of phenyl alpha naphthylamine and n-butyl (dimethyldithiocarbamyl) acetate; and (iii) 0.25 per cent wt. phenyl beta naphthylamine, 0.1 per cent wt. n-butyl (di-n-butyl dithiocarbamyl) acetate and 0.015 per cent wt. of an alkylated succinic acid corrision inhibitor.
