Abstract

898,897. Fluid friction brakes. ELECTRIC & MUSICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 19, 1958 [Oct. 12, 1957], No. 31930/57. Class 103 (1). [Also in Groups XVI, XX, XXXV and XXXVIII] A magnetically controlled fluid brake mechanism, especially adapted for use with webfeeding apparatus has a vane member 3, of ferro-magnetic material, which is rotatable, with a small clearance in a drum member 1 of non-magnetic material containing a viscous oil or silicone fluid. The member 3 is freely journalled inside the member 1, but is restrained from free rotation by the field from an appropriate permanent or electromagnet. Braking is thus effected by the flow of the viscous liquid through the small annular gaps between the member 1 and 3. The drum is rotated either directly by feeding the web over it or by shaft means attached to one end (Figs. 1, 4, not shown). For use, independently or additionally, as a dynamometer, additional pointed arms 15 (Fig. 6) are added to the member 3 and magnetic sensing apparatus, represented diagrammatically by the polepieces 17 measure the displacement of the member 3 from its neutral position.
