Abstract

757,829. Pitot-tubes. KOLLSMAN INSTRUMENT CORPORATION. May 7, 1954, No. 13394/54. Class 69 (1). A pitot-tube device for measuring wind speed and direction and having no exposed moving parts comprises a substantially flat disc-like shell with conduits enclosed therein and terminating in pressure openings evenly spaced round the periphery of the shell, and a mounting member connected to one of the flat surfaces of the shell and through which the conduits extend. The shell may include an electric heating coil; as shown, the shell 1 is formed as a body 3 mounted on a shaft 4 with threaded mounting portion 4a and a top cover plate 2. The body 3 has four pressure apertures 4 disposed in quadrature and connected in pairs so as to measure, say, the North-South and East- West components of wind velocity. These components are converted into proportional A.C. voltages and applied to perpendicular windings of a rotary transformer; perpendicular secondary windings are positioned so that the voltage in one is a measure of the magnitude of the wind speed by using the voltage induced in the other to control a motor so as to bring this voltage to zero, the position of the rotor then indicating wind direction.
