Abstract

898,195. Rocket motor casings. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 1, 1959 [Aug. 15, 1958], No. 26387/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 9(2). A tubular pressure vessel, e.g. a rocket motor casing, is made by applying a parting agent to a mandrel, followed by a layer or layers of thermoplastic or cured or curable elastomeric material adapted to provide a hydraulic seal, and then applying successive layers of helically wound strip metal and bonding material to form a structure in which the edges of the strip metal abut in each layer and the edges are displaced in successive layers; the layers are bonded together, e.g. by internally heating the mandrel, and the tubular structure is removed. The parting agent, e.g. paper sheet, prevents the thermoplastic or elastomeric material from sticking to the mandrel. Epoxy resins, e.g. the condensation product of epichlorhydrin and bisphenol, are suitable bonding materials for steel strip. Polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride may be used as the hydraulic sealing material, which may also act as thermal insulation. Further thermal insulation may be added after removal from the mandrel. In order to attach an end portion to the tube, an extruded rubber or thermoplastic element is bonded to the tube and the end portion. Specification 898,194 is referred to.
