Abstract
849,121. Laminates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 31, 1958 [Jan. 7, 1958], No. 678/58. Class 140. [Also in Group XXVIII] A fibre-reinforced resin article, e.g. the wall of a tube 10, has a non-displaceable covering comprising a laminate consisting of two metal layers 12, 14, e.g. of aluminium foil, and sandwiched between them in bonded contact therewith a layer 13 of plastics material, which is substantially impermeable to moisture. The article 10 may be an epoxy or polyester resin containing glass fibres, and the layer 13 may be a thermosetting or thermoplastic material and may be one which can be bonded directly to the metal, e.g. an epoxy resin, or one requiring an adhesive, e.g. polyethylene, cellulose, rubber, polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride. The laminate 12 ... 14 may be secured to the article 10 by an adhesive, e.g. an epoxy resin, the article being either cured before securing the laminate thereto, or the article and laminate being secured together during curing of the article. A flexible layer 11 of a moisture-impermeable plastics material, e.g. an epoxy resin/polyamide mixture, or preferably polyethylene, may be interposed between the article 10 and the laminate 12 ... 14 to prevent cracks in the article 10 being conducted into the foil 12. In an example, for making a tube covered on both surfaces, an aluminium foil coated on one face with an epoxy resin is applied, metal downwards, to a mandrel and a second similar foilresin layer, resin downwards, applied to the first. A glass-fibre reinforced resin layer is then wound on the laminate and a laminate similar to the first applied to the wound reinforced resin layer. The whole is cured and removed from the mandrel. The laminate may be applied by winding helically with adjacent turns in edge-abutting relationship, adjacent laminµ being staggered to prevent a straight radial path through the covering being formed. The laminµ may alternatively be applied to provide longitudinally extending lap joints, which should be radially staggered. In another example applied to a tube, a pressure-sensitive silicone adhesive is employed first to bond an aluminium foil/polyethylene laminate to the tube wall and then to bond a similar laminate to the first, the foil being outermost in each case.
