Abstract
897,754. Drying fabric in long lengths. FAIRBAIRN LAWSON COMBE BARBOUR Ltd. July 22, 1958 [July 22, 1957], No. 23071/57. Class 34(1) A machine for drying continuous or long webs or woven, felted or thread-like material comprises two or three drums arranged in juxtaposition, a cover which together with the drums encloses a continuous space which extends around part of the periphery of each drum and across the junction or junctions between the drums, there being sealing means for preventing ingress of air to the enclosed space except through its ends, means for drawing the material over the drums through the space from end-to-end thereof, and suction means for withdrawing air from the enclosed space, the suction means being positioned so as to produce countercurrent flow of air and the material through the greater part of the length of the space. In the machine shown warps 10, 12, Fig. 1, are wound on a single beam on a frame 14 after each has passed through drying apparatus comprising three rotating drums 16, 18, 20 each covered over approximately three-quarters of its peripheral surface by a hood 40, Fig. 2, having depending annular sealing felts 42 engaging the drum ends. The drums are mounted on rollers 20, 28 carried by the frames 22 of the apparatus and each hood is supported at the ends of its associated drum by a ring 34 and radial arms 36. Continuity of hood between the drums 16 and 18 and 18 and 20 is ensured by end plates 60, Fig. 3, at each end of the apparatus supported by radial arms 46 which project from the rings 34 and carry fairings 50, 54 extending lengthwise of the drums. Air sealing between each fairing and its associated drum surface is effected by sealing strips such as 52, 58. A suction fan in a duct 61 draws drying air into the space 44 between the hood and the drums through the warp exit 64. Ingress of air through the warp entry slot is prevented by a flexible seal 66. The invention may be applied to a machine having two drums. Specifications 290,296 and 663,161 are referred to.
