Abstract

897,592. Steering motor vehicles. ALL WHEEL DRIVE Ltd., EDE, F. E., and DEAN, H. F. Feb. 23, 1961 [Feb. 26, 1960], No. 6789/60. Class 79(5). A gear mechanism is provided in the steering column of a motor vehicle and is brought into operation by a rotary member which has two operative positions, one of which provides a direct connection between the steering wheel and the steering gear input shaft, the other of which provides for the transmission of the steering torque through the gear train whereby its sense becomes reversed at the steering gear input shaft. The arrangement enables the vehicle to be steered when travelling in either direction whereby a clockwise movement of the steering wheel produces a right hand turn in both cases. The steering wheel is fixed to a shaft 12 and the steering gear to an input shaft 13. A pinion 21 is rotatably mounted on a bush 22 on the shaft 12 and a pinion 28, which rotates in bearings 30 and 31, is fixed to the shaft 13. The shaft 12 is supported in bearings 15 and 16 and a clutch member 12 is slidable upon splines at the ends thereof. The pinion 21 is in permanent mesh with one half of a pinion 23, the other half of which is in mesh with one half of a pinion 24 (Fig. 4) the other half of which meshes with the pinion 28. The clutch member 20 may be moved along the splines and be brought into engagement with a complementary member in either the pinion 28 or the pinion 21 so as to transmit drive from the shaft 12 directly to the shaft 13, or through the gear train 21, 23, 24 and 28. Gears 23 and 24 are of equal size. The clutch control fork 32 is mounted on a shaft 33 spring urged into a slot 36 in a boss 37, the slot having a cam surface whereby the shaft 33 is moved backwards and forwards. A spring detent member is provided to locate the two operational positions of the boss. A spring controlled plunger 43 provided in the boss 27 co-operates with flats upon the gearing casing and operates a switch which energises a solenoid which serves to cut off fuel from the engine in the positions in which the steering wheel is not connected to either driving position. An instrument panel may be fixed to the boss 37 and the instruments are the right way up when the wheels steered are in the front in the direction of travel.
