Abstract

Petroleum lubricating oil which contains polycyclic aromatics is refined by selectively hydrogenating the polycyclic aromatics at 316 to 427 DEG C. and 36 to 212 kg./cm.2 absolute (i.e. 500 to 3,000 p.s.i.g.), preferably at 343 to 400 DEG C. and 85 to 165 kg./cm.2 absolute, in the presence of a hydrogen- and hydrogen sulphide-containing gas and nickel sulphide catalyst in which the atomic ratio Ni:S is 1,3 to 3:1, preferably 1,4 to 1,8:1. The oil to be treated may be unrefined, partly refined, or a lubricating oil fraction, and is preferably deasphalted or asphalt-free but not dewaxed. The treating gas contains hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen in a molar ratio of 0,0002 to 0,02, and the uptake of hydrogen by the oil is 17,8 to 53 standard m.3/m.3 of oil at a liquid hourly space velocity of 0,1 to 5, preferably 0,2 to 1, volumes of oil per volume of catalyst. The treated oil is particularly suitable as a base to which viscosity index improves such as a copolymer of 2-methyl-5 vinyl pyridine with lauryl, stearyl and methyl methacrylates, or a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone and lauryl methacrylate, are to be added. The nickel sulphide catalyst is most suitably prepared by passing a mixture of the oil to be treated together with a small quantity of carbon disulphide through a pelleted catalyst bed, which comprises by weight 40% nickel in the form of nickel carbonate composited with granulated kieselguhr, and maintained at 375 DEG C. and 106 kg./cm.2, at a space velocity of 1 vol./hr. Alternatively, the catalyst may be prepared by mixing or impregnating suitable supporting materials, e.g. alumina, silica, thoria, zirconia or titania, with reducible nickel salts, followed by conventional drying and/or pelleting procedures. If desired, the salts can then be reduced to metallic form before sulphiding. Other methods of preparing the catalyst are by sulphiding nickel with hydrogen sulphide, by reacting finely divided nickel metal with carbon disulphide, and by reducing higher nickel sulphides with hydrogen.
