Abstract
896,750. Suction cleaners. HOOVER Ltd. Oct. 7, 1958 [Oct. 16, 1957], No. 31997/58. Class 8(1). A suction nozzle 43, Fig. 1, of a handlepropelled motor fan cleaner is mounted for power driven repeated lateral movement relative to the cleaner body 11. The nozzle mouth 46 comprises the outer open end of an inclined tube 45 extending radially from a cylindrical housing 44 rotated about a vertical shaft 39 by a belt 54 running over a pulley 53 secured to the housing 44 and a pulley 55 driven through friction wheels 57, 59, from the lower end of the motor-fan shaft 60. Suction air traverses apertures 78 in the housing 44, a stationary manifold 77 and a duct 75 leading to an enclosed dust bag 73. The speed of rotation of the nozzle 43 is such that its relatively small inlet 46 scans overlapping annular areas in the path of the cleaner. In a modification the nozzle 127, Fig. 3 (not shown), is oscillated through an arc bounded by the width of the cleaner body and in a further modification the nozzle 185, Fig. 5 is reciprocated laterally of and within a conventional nozzle 170 of the cleaner body 149 by opposite threads 188, 189, Fig. 6, on a shaft 177 driven through a belt 179 from a shaft 174 which in turn is driven through a belt 176 from the fan shaft 171. The conventional nozzle inlet 168 is connected by a passage 165 to the suction fan which discharges through a nozzle 208 and induces air through a duct 197 connected by a flexible hose 195 to the outlet of the reciprocating nozzle 185.
