Abstract

512,382. Vacuum cleaners : electric motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 10, 1938, No. 32649. Convention date, Nov. 10, 1937. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] Air is directed into the casing 7 of a vacuum cleaner through the suction hose 43 and a tangential coupling, and flows spirally downwards in the space between the casing and a cylindrical rubber member 10 ; dust is separated and falls into a receptacle 53 through a slotted screen 52. The air flows into a cup-shaped member 46, fixed to the lower end of the cylinder 10 partly through a filter 48 and partly through openings 47 formed by striking tabs inwards at an acute angle so that the entering air must turn sharply and separate further dust. The air then passes through a filter 50 carried by a flanged ring 16 supported by the rubber cylinder 10, and is drawn by the fan 25 into the motor-fan casing 20 which, with its bottom plate, is supported by the ring 16 and carries the motor through bolts 29 and rubber bushings 33. The air is discharged through openings 36 ; these openings can be closed by a valve 37, the air then issues as a blast through a tube 39 carried by the valve and may be used, e.g., in spraying paint.
