Abstract

896,693. Repairing ingot moulds; uniting by fusion. GALVANI, G. Oct. 29, 1958, No. 34750/58. Class 83 (4). A method of repairing and refitting ingot moulds, casting plates and the like comprises the steps of applying an anchoring weld deposit and of applying a filling weld deposit consisting of a material different from that of the anchoring weld deposit which steps are effected while the article being repaired is cold, and in succession. The first step consists in removing the damaged, burnt or oxidized part of the erosion 3 with a cutting electrode, or a chisel, drill, milling cutter or grinder. The cavity 7 is divided into cavities 8, 9 and 10 by refractory partitions 11 and 12 and the repair of these cavities is effected in succession but not at first in contiguous cavities. The repair consists of applying concurrently an anchoring layer 14 of cast iron and a cast iron filling 15 from cast iron electrodes the filling electrode being coated with a mixture of pure carbon powder, sodium silicate and Kaolin. During the repair the mass is kept at red heat and after cooling the partitions 11 and 12 are removed and the gaps filled with metal from the cast iron electrode. In another example the cavity 22 to be repaired is partly filled as hitherto but using non-coated electrodes and the outside is completed with a micro-crystalline cast iron coated electrode to produce a hard and heat-resistant surface 26 (Fig. 5). In a modification for repairing a split 27 in an ingot mould 1 (Fig. G) transverse seatings 28 are cut in the mould for receiving steel plates 31<SP>1</SP> which are inserted hot and attached by weld fillets 32, Fig. 9. On cooling the chambers 30 of the seatings are filled with weld material. The plate, which will always remain under stress, may be protected by a second plate 31<SP>11</SP> (Fig. 11).
