A gate 1 which can open by hinging about either side on gate posts 10, 10<SP>1</SP> comprises an auxiliary stile member 3, 3<SP>1</SP> at each side capable of angular movement relative to the gate about an axis 2, 2<SP>1</SP>, coupling components 13<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>1</SP> on each auxiliary stile member engageable with corresponding components 11<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>1</SP> on the gate posts, and operating means on the gate for displacing one or other of the auxiliary stile members and its coupling components to a disengaging position so that the gate may be opened by swinging it about the coupling components at the other side, simultaneous disengagement of both sets of coupling components being prevented. The components 11<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>1</SP> on the posts each comprise a vertical hinge pin having horizontal arms which may be threaded to serve as fixing bolts, and the upper and lower components 13<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>1</SP> on the auxiliary stile members, shown respectively in Figs. 2 and 3, are shaped so that on tilting an auxiliary stile member in a direction to move its upper end away from the gate the components move to the disengaging position. The lower hinge pins have shoulders which support the components 14<SP>1</SP> and take the weight of the gate. The operating means comprises a pair of tie rods 5, 5<SP>1</SP> which connect the respective auxiliary stile members to opposite sides of a triangular plate 6 pivoted on the gate at 7 and rigidly connected to a control arm 8. When the control arm is vertical both sets of coupling components are engaged, and movement of the arm in either direction causes both tie rods to move in the same direction, with the effect that one set of coupling components is released and simultaneously the gate is tilted about its pivotal connection 2, 2<SP>1</SP> with the other auxiliary stile member in a direction to raise the side of the gate which has been released, thus transferring the whole weight of the gate to the coupling components on the side which remains connected. The lower components 14<SP>1</SP> are chamfered at 18 to ensure that they clear the shoulders when the gate closes.
