Abstract
895,800. Hydraulic apparatus. WESTERN HYDRAULIC & SERVICE CO. Inc. Jan. 24, 1961, No. 2760/61. Class 69 (2). A strut for operating the wheel well of an aircraft undercarriage comprises a guiding element 1, Fig. 4. having a shouldered portion 11, a guided element 2 on which is mounted dog means 3, a toggle device 4 operatively engaged with the dog means, spring means 43 acting on the toggle device to urge the dog means into locking engagement with the shouldered portion, and a member 18 movable against the spring means to retract the toggle device and permit disengaging of the dog means from the shouldered portion. The guiding element consists of a cylinder 1 receiving the guided element which is in the form of a piston on a rod 2. The piston carries the radially-movable dogs 3 which are engaged by toggles 4 pivotally connected to a plunger 41 movable in a bore in the piston against the spring 43. The plunger can be moved against the spring, so that the piston can be moved relative to the cylinder manually or by hydraulic pressure supplied through one or other of parts B, C, by fluid pressure supplied through a port 17 moving a piston 18 against a spring 19 into engagement with the plunger to withdraw the toggles, the bevelled surfaces on the dogs and shouldered portion of the cylinder causing the dogs to move inwardly as a result of relative movement between the piston and cylinder. In another embodiment, the plunger 41, Fig. 1, is formed with an extension 45 accessible for manual operation of the toggles through openings 12. The cylinder may be formed with a second shouldered recess 13 which is engaged by the dogs to hold the strut in an extended position, the recess being of less depth than that of the portion 11 so that the dogs may easily be forced out of engagement therewith. In further embodiments, the dogs are mounted so as to be movable radially inwardly into locking engagement with a shouldered portion. U.S.A. Specification 2,744,501 is referred to.
