781,772. Pushing jacks. DEMAGAKT.-GES. Aug. 16, 1954 [Aug. 14, 1953], No. 23736/54. Class 78 (3). A thrusting mechanism for advancing coalextracting machinery 5 towards a coal face comprises a double-acting fluid pressure jack 8, 9 and a reaction strut 11 connected to the jack by a rigid distance-piece which is of sufficient length to leave a space to permit the operator to move thereover. The distancepiece comprises a pair of telescoping channel members 15, 17 interconnected by a releasable and reversible spring-loaded pawl 20 on member 15 which engages holes 18 in member 17. The arrangement is such that with the chamfered face of the pawl in the position shown, reciprocation of the piston 8 in cylinder 9 produces a step-by-step movement which alternately advances the machine 5 and extends the distancepiece ; whilst when the pawl is reversed reciprocation of the piston alternately retracts the distance-piece and moves the strut towards the face. A further fluid pressure jack 27, 28 is provided to advance the strut towards the jack in one movement when the pawl is released. In a modification (not shown), the distancepiece consists solely of a jack. The strut 11 is shown as a pair of telescoping members held in their adjusted position by a locking pin, but according to a further modification (not shown) it may consist of a fluid pressure jack. The Specification states that all the jacks may be controlled remotely.
