Abstract

895,341. Launching aircraft from vehicles supported by gaseous cushions. HOVERCRAFT DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. May 2, 1958 [May 2, 1957], No. 14098/57. Addition to 854,211. Class 4. A carrier for housing and launching aircraft comprises a substantially flat platform, a substantially pointed forward end 1, a rounded aft end 2, cockpit 3 and a control tower (not shown). An air intake 6 at the forward end leads into a duct 7 housing fans 8 driven by engines 10. Duct 7 leads to further ducts 12, 13 which in turn lead to a peripherally extending mouth 14 formed round the bottom of the carrier. The space contained within mouth 14 is compartmented by further mouths 15, 16, and the carrier is supported above the surface of land or water by a cushion of air contained by the gaseous curtains ejected from mouths 14, 15 and 16. When water is ejected from such mouths air is pumped into the resulting cavities to provide a supporting cushion. The carrier is formed with hangers 17 to house aircraft 18, 19 which are raised by a lift 20. In use the carrier is propelled forwardly on its cushion of air until the take-off speed of an aircraft clamped to the deck is reached. Release of the aircraft enables it to fly off.
