Abstract

894,563. Protective cut-out arrangements. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 24, 1960 [July 30, 1959], No. 26196/59. Class 38 (o). [Also in Group XXXV] In a rectifier/inverter equipment having polyphase voltage transforming means T1, T2 in combination with a plurality of grid-controlled gaseous-conductor valves V1 . . . V10, means are provided for deriving an electrical quantity which varies in dependence upon the algebraic difference between currents flowing simultaneously in at least two anode - cathode paths of the equipment, switching means responding when the quantity reaches a value signifying a " breakthrough " fault in one of the paths when the equipment is inverting. The switching means may also respond when the quantity reaches a value signifying a " backfire " fault in one of the paths when the equipment is rectifying. In Fig. 1 the six output phases of each of the transformers T1, T2 are applied to the anodes of five six-anode mercury-arc valves V1 . . . V5 and V6 . . . V10, respectively, the valves being arranged in pairs, one from each group of five. The cathode connections of the two valves in each pair provide differentially arranged D.C. control conductors CC of a saturable core reactance device RD having A.C. windings AC1, AC2 supplied from a transformer T3 in series with a bridge rectifier RF connected to the trip coil TC of circuitbreaker XB. Under normal conditions the currents in each pair of control conductors CC are of the same magnitude so that the core of each device RD is not saturated and the associated A.C. windings AC1, AC2 have a high impedance preventing the energization of the trip coil TC. In the event of a fault in either valve of a pair of valves, the currents in the associated control conductors CC will differ, causing the core of the device RD to be magnetized so reducing the impedance of the A.C. windings AC1, AC2 and causing the tripping of the circuit-breaker XB to cut-out the affected pair of valves. Fig. 2 (not shown) illustrates an arrangement for a small number of valves in which only the faulty valve is disconnected. In this case the control conductors CC are located in the anode connections of the valves.
