Abstract

A thermoplastic polymer of an acrylate and/or methacrylate ester is produced from monomers thereof by conducting the major portion of the polymerization of the monomeric ester in the presence of a chain transfer agent at an isothermal polymerization temperature in the range 50 DEG C. to 150 DEG C. with a variation of +5 DEG C. and with the gradual addition of polymerization initiator to the stage of rapidly accelerating reaction rate. The polymer may be a homopolymer of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl or butyl methacrylate or ethyl acrylate, or a copolymer of two or more thereof, or copolymers thereof with other polymerizable compounds such as vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate and styrene. The chain transfer agent may be methyl, ethyl or lauryl mercaptan, and the initiator may be any normally used for acrylate or methacrylate polymerization, such as an azo compound, benzoyl peroxide or tertiary butyl perisobutyrate. Examples describe polymerization in an aqueous phase with the production of a granular polymer. Specifications 362,013 and 427,494 are referred to.
