Abstract

Substantially globular but only partly gelatinized particles of nitrocellulose having a diameter of not more than about 0,012 inch are formed by suspending nitrocellulose fibres in an aqueous medium in the ratio of about 1 part by weight of nitrocellulose to 10-17 parts by weight of aqueous medium, coating the fibres with a protective colloid, adding about 1,6 parts by weight of ethyl acetate for each part by weight of nitrocellulose, thereafter adding ethyl acetate to the slurry at a rate not greater than about 0,25 part by weight per 100 parts by weight of nitrocellulose per second while maintaining the ethyl acetate to nitrocellulose ratio not greater than about 3:1, agitating the slurry until the fibres have assumed a globular form without complete dissolution of the nitrocellulose, and removing the solvent from the globular particles. The protective colloid may be gum arabic or an animal glue. In the example, 100 parts by weight of fibrous nitrated cotton linters having a nitrogen content of 12,6% are slurried in 1500 parts of-water and the slurry is agitated with 50 parts of gum arabic. One part of dinitro diphenylamine is added, the slurry is heated to 65 DEG -68 DEG F. and 160 parts by weight of ethyl acetate are uniformly dispersed in the slurry. A total of 140 further parts of ethyl acetate is added at a rate of 0,25 parts per second and agitation is continued until the particles assume a globular shape. A solution of 90 parts of sodium sulphate in 300 parts of water is uniformly mixed with the slurry to aid the formation of dense non-porous grains, and the slurry is heated to and maintained at the boiling point until all the solvent has been removed from the globules. Globular nitrocellulose grains produced as described above are suitable for use in moulding large propellant grains and other articles. U.S.A. Specifications 2,027,114 and 2,160,626 are referred to.
