Abstract

Nitrogenous fibres, such as wool, silk or polyamide fibres, are dyed or printed with a 1 : 2-chromium or 1 : 2-cobalt complex compound of an azo dyestuff containing at least two acid solubilising groups in the complex, the operation being effected in the presence of a cationic, surface-active compound containing no polyglycol ether chains. The complex may comprise two similar or dissimilar azo dyestuffs per atom of metal and the acid groups, e.g., sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups, may be attached to one or both dyestuff molecules, and numerous complexes are specified. Specified cationic compounds are quaternary ammonium compounds such as cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, cetyl pyridinium bromide, tetradecyl pyridinium bromide, dimethylbenzyl lauryl ammonium chloride, dimethylbenzylstearyl ammonium chloride, dihydroxyethyl benzyl lauryl ammonium chloride, dimethylcyclohexyl lauryl ammonium bromide, quaternary ammonium salts containing at least two quaternary ammonium nitrogen atoms, and salts, if desired quaternary ammonium salts, of basic condensation products of alkylolamides of higher fatty acids with alkanolamines, such as the acetate of the condensation product of stearic acid methylolamide with triethanolamine. The dyebath also preferably contains a non-ionic dispersant, e.g., a polyglycol ether of an alcohol or alkylphenol or of a fatty acid or alkylmercaptan. Dyeing is preferably effected in an acid bath at temperatures up to the boil. The wetfastness of the dyeing is increased if the pH of the bath is increased to above 6 after the fibres have absorbed the desired amount of dyestuff, and when mixtures of nitrogenous and cellulose fibres are to be dyed, a direct dyestuff for the cellulose fibres may be added to the bath after the pH has been so raised. The process is also particularly suitable for the melange printing of worsted slubbings, the paste containing, in addition to the dyestuff and cationic agent, the usual thickness and, if desired, an acid such as acetic acid, urea, oil of turpentine and sodium nitrobenzene sulphonate. Numerous examples are given.
