Abstract

As coating compositions there are used dispersions of polymers in organic liquids, in which the polymers are insoluble, which have been produced by polymerizing at least one acrylic or vinyl benzene monomer in the presence of a catalyst and a colloid which yields a gel or thick liquid when dispersed or dissolved in the organic liquid in a proportion of less than 10% by weight. Such compositions may be pigmented and plasticised in the usual ways. In an Example (5) glass and previously primed steel panels are sprayed with a composition obtained by polymerizing method methacrylate in a mixture of mineral spirits and iso-octane containing polyisobutylene as a colloid and adding dioctyl phthalate and titanium dioxide to the thus produced dispersion, and stored.ALSO:Stable dispersions of polymers in organic liquids in which the polymers are insoluble are produced by polymerizing at least one acrylic or vinyl benzene monomer dissolved in the organic liquid in the presence of a catalyst and a lyophilic colloid which yields a gel or thick liquid when dispersed or dissolved in the organic liquid in a proportion of less than 10% by weight. Monomers specified are acrylic and methacrylic acids, amides, nitriles and esters, e.g. methyl methacrylate, 2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate, and styrene, divinyl benzene and alkyl derivatives thereof, e.g. vinyl toluene. The choice of the organic liquid depends upon the polarity of the monomer to be polymerized, for example methyl methacrylate is polymerized in a non-polar liquid, such as a paraffin hydrocarbon, whilst styrene or vinyl toluene is polymerized in a polar liquid, such as ethyl alcohol or methyl alcohol. The choice of colloid depends upon the polarity of the organic liquid, colloids such as natural rubber, polybutadiene and polyisobutylene being used with non-polar solvents, and colloids such as polyvinyl alcohol and polymethacrylic acid being used with polar solvents. Catalysts specified are benzoyl peroxide, tertiary butyl hydroperoxide and azodiisobutyronitrile. A surface active agent may be present in the polymerization medium, e.g. non-ionic agents, sulphonated oils, sodium soap and soaps of polyvalent metals. The dispersions may be used in coating applications, for which purpose they may be used in conjunction with plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, and pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide. The Provisional Specification describes also the application of the above process to other monomers, e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, allyl acetate, diallyl adipate, diethyl maleate, maleic anhydride, dimethyl itaconate and dimethyl acetylene dicarboxylic acid ester. In an Example (1) a process is described in which vinyl acetate is polymerized in iso-octane containing crepe rubber.
