A fluid dispersion of polymer particles in an organic liquid is prepared by polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the liquid, in which polymerization, subsequent to an initial seed nucleation stage, there is at least one re-nucleation stage and continuation of the polymerization so that polymer particles of at least two different sizes are grown to produce a dispersion containing more than 60% by volume of disperse polymer, smaller size particles occupying the interstices between larger size particles. The polymer particles are stabilized in the liquid by a stabilizer comprising an anchoring component which is associated with the surface of the particles and a pendent chain-like component which is solvated by the organic liquid. In Examples 1 to 3, methyl methacrylate is polymerized in a hydrocarbon medium containing a stabilizer precursor comprising a lauryl methacrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer reacted with methacrylic acid. The dispersion of Example 2 is dissolved in a toluene/acetone mixture. The dispersion in Example 3 is converted to a plastisol by replacing the hydrocarbon medium with alphamethyl cyclohexanyl phthalate. In Example 4, 2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate is included in the reaction mixture. A preformed stabilizer comprising a methyl methacrylate-methacrylio acid copolymer having side chains consisting of the self-ester of 12-hydroxystearic acid is employed in Example 5 in the production of a dispersion of polyvinyl acetate.
