892,692. Filters in parallel; backflushing. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Nov. 25, 1960 [Nov. 27, 1959], No. 40519/60. Class 46. In the position shown, gas-turbine fuel is boosted at 16 and passing along conduit 20 is directed by valve 28 through a filter 34, and the filtered fuel is directed by valve 30 to main pump 14, whence it passes into a control unit 12. Most of the fuel passes at 10 to the engine but the excess passes along conduit 52 and is directed by valve 30 backwards through a filter 32, the resulting suspension of fuel and residue being directed by valve 28 along conduit 64 to be separated in a density centrifuge 66 and the thus-cleaned fuel being added to conduit 20 at 82. A drum cam 96 driven by the centrifuge impeller 68 through reduction gearing (ratio e.g. 1 : 10,000) periodically changes-over the valves 28, 30 simultaneously through linkage 86 to 94 so as to transpose the functions of the filters 32, 34. Alternatively the valve movement may take place in response to a predetermined pressure drop across the filter in use.
