Abstract
Parenterally administrable therapeutic compositions comprise tetracycline free base or a pharmaceutically acceptable organic or inorganic acid addition salt, chelate, complex or ester thereof or 6-dimethyl tetracycline or pyrrolidino-methyl-tetracycline and, as vehicle, a dioxalane of general formula <FORM:0891817/VI/1> wherein R and R1 may represent hydrogen atoms or methyl or ethyl radicals and R2 may represent a hydrogen atom or a methyl, carbinol or ethylol radical, the preferred compound being 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxalone-4-methanol. There may also be present a water soluble and parenterally acceptable acid e.g. citric acid (preferred), ascorbic acid, lactic acid, gluconic acid or glycine hydrochloride; other antibiotics e.g. novobiocin or penicillin V (e.g. as the tetracycline salt); local anaesthetics e.g. butethamine, dibucaine, procaine, tetracaine and lidocaine; compounds capable of providing a magnesium ion e.g. magnesium chloride and magnesium gluconate and surfactants which, when the preparation is to be a suspension, may be present as a "coating" on the tetracycline particles.
