A mowing machine comprises two rotary cutter units, which either co-operate with adjustable ledger blades or cut by impact and are so mounted on the front of a tractor that there is little or no space between the swaths cut by the respective units. As illustrated, the machine comprises two frusto-conical cutting units each having helical blades mounted on a hollow shaft 2 which is rotatable about and slidable relative to a shaft 6. Each shaft 6 is supported in a framework comprising longitudinal members 7, 8, 9 and end plates 10, 11, the latter comprising arms 14 each of which is integral with a disc 15, integral with the respective shaft 6. The discs 15 of the two cutter units are interleaved and pivoted on a pin 16. The plates 10, 11 also carry bearings for the respective shaft 2, the bearings supported by plates 11 being situated within the envelopes of their respective set of cutter blades, with the result that the plates 11 may be closely adjacent, particularly at the lowermost point of their circumference, as shown in Fig. 1. If the units are tilted about the pivot pin 16, the shafts 2 slide relative to the shafts 6 to maintain the proximity of the plates 11. The cutter units are each supported by ground wheels 19, 20, and also by parallel linkages from a beam 21 supported in front of a tractor and connected to the hydraulic lift links of the latter. The units are driven via belts and pulleys 32, 33, 34 from a shaft 31 housed within said beam 21 and driven from the power take-off of the tractor. In the event of there being a gap between the two units, either a knife blade may be incorporated in the machine for diverting the grass into the path of one or other cutter unit, or a small, auxiliary rotary cutter may be provided for cutting the remaining strip of grass.
