Abstract
The invention comprises 6-chloro-D 1,4,6- and 6-chloro-D 4,6-steroids of the general formulae <FORM:0890835/IV (b)/1> and <FORM:0890835/IV (b)/2> wherein X is =O or <FORM:0890835/IV (b)/3> Y is hydrogen, fluoro, chloro or bromo, and R is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon carboxylic acyl group of less than 12 carbon atoms, together with a process for the preparation of the 6-chloro-D 1,4,6-steroids of the above formula by dehydrogenating a 21-ester of the corresponding 6a -chloro-D 4-pregnene derivative with chloranil. The process may be conducted in one step using chloranil in n-amyl alcohol, or in two steps using chloranil in xylene to give the intermediate D 4,6-derivative which is further dehydrogenated with chloranil in n-amyl alcohol or with selenium dioxide in t-butanol.
