Abstract
<PICT:0890668/III/1> Zone-refining of a solid body is effected by means of one or more thermoelectric heat pumps, each pump comprising a thermoelement, e.g. a rectangular block of one of the materials described in Specification 814,594, sandwiched between a pair of thermojunction plates. The direction in which current is passed through the pump from plate to plate is determined by whether the element is of N- or P-type and the direction of travel of the pump. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) the pump is passed through an elongated block of material to be purified in an open container, material being melted by heat emitted by the leading plate, passed round the pump, and solidified by extraction of heat by the other plate. In the second embodiment (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) four P-N double heat pumps are situated crosswise between two elongated blocks arranged in staggered relationship so that on termination of a pass the unrefined portion of each block is molten. In this embodiment, two successive molten zones are passed through each block, each molten zone in each body being produced by the heatemitting end plates of one double pump and solidified by the heat-absorbing end plates of the next double pump.
