Abstract

The process of the parent Specification for the simultaneous preparation of acrylonitrile, monovinyl acetylene and acetaldehyde by introducing acetylene and hydrocyanic acid under superatmospheric pressure in the range 1-4 atmospheres absolute and at about 70 DEG C. to about 110 DEG C. into an aqueous cuprous chloride solution containing dissolved hydrochloric acid, ammonium chloride and/or an alkali metal chloride is modified by using an amount of between about 20% and 50% of HCN, calculated on that quantity of HCN which would, when using an excess of HCN, be converted to acrylonitrile under the reaction conditions. By-products obtained include divinyl acetylene, cyanbutadiene, methyl vinyl ketone, chloroprene and higher acetylene polymers.
