Abstract

890,389. Rolling. SCHLOEMANN A.G. July 17, 1959 [Aug. 12, 1958], No. 24587/59. Class 83 (4). In a multi-roll rolling mill housing having working rolls 8, 8a supported and frictionally driven by rolls 9, 10 and 9a, 10a respectively, each of the pairs of supporting rolls 9, 10 and 9a, 10a is supported on the one hand by a positively driven backing roll 3 common to both rolls of the pair and on the other hand by a row of supporting rolls 13, 14 journalled in a rigid beam. Intermediate rolls 11, 12, 11a, 12a may also be introduced. The rows of rolls 13, 14, 13a, 14a are journalled in brackets 15 slidable in the fixed beams 16, 17, 16a, 17a and are held in engagement with the respective backing rolls 3 and 5 by a lever and link system attached to the rigid beams and operated by cylinders 31. A pivoted hooked lever 22 may be engaged or disengaged from lugs 20 as required. Alignment is maintained between the rolls 13, 14, the intermediate rolls 11, 12 and the supporting rolls 9, 10 by holders 42 rockable about the axis of the supporting rolls 13, 14, each holder resiliently accommodating a forked member 43 which carries the bearing 44 of the supporting roll. Outwardly of the bearings 44 the supporting rolls 9, 10, 9a, 10a are journalled in levers 50, Fig. 7 (not shown), which are biased by cylinders to urge the supporting rolls into contact with the backing rolls. The working rolls 8, 8a biased apart by a spring- loaded toggle linkage, Fig. 7 (not shown), are maintained axially in position by extension pieces 73 and stirrups 70. The rolls 9, 9a are made larger than the rolls 10, 10a and/or are set closer to the plane of the backing rolls so that on removal of the working rolls 8, 8a the mill may be used with the rolls 9, 9a as the working rolls. The mill may also be used as a conventional two-high or four-high mill. Specification 752,351 is referred to.
