Abstract

889,869. Rotary sprayers. BRITISH OVERHEAD IRRIGATION Ltd. Dec. 8, 1958 [Sept. 9, 1957], No. 28385/57. Class 69 (3). A rotary spray head with nozzles 20 has a tube 30 extending into a chamber 24 of a stationary hollow body 14, and the tube is flanged at 32 and has lugs 36, Fig. 3, extending therefrom. A turbine wheel 40, Fig. 4, is loosely carried in the chamber 24 and has vanes 42 by which it is rotated, and lugs 44 for engaging the lugs of the spray head when water under pressure is supplied to the sprayer at 26. In operation, water is forced through the body via passages in a flow-controlling element 52, Fig. 5, and passes through the tube 30 to the nozzles; water pressure forces the flange 32 upwardly against a cap 28 of the body, and also causes the turbine wheel to loosely engage the lugs of the spray head. The wheel rotates at a comparatively high speed, and the faces of its lugs knock against the faces of the spray head lugs to rotate the head relatively slowly. The jets 20, and a passageway element 57 in the element 52 may be replaced by others of different size. In the embodiment of Fig. 6, a turbine wheel 86 is a loose fit on a tubular portion 78 of the spray head, and rests on a star wheel 88 secured to the tubular portion extending into the chamber 81. The wheel is rotated by its raked vanes 90, Fig. 9, and has inclined faces 94 which, in operation, knock repeatedly against the lobes 89 of the star wheel to thereby drive the spray head relatively slowly. Water passes through opposed passages 100, 102 and against the vanes of the turbine wheel, and a valve 98 controls the flow of water to the chamber 81. A number of such devices may be fed from a supply pipe located below ground level, with the nozzles arranged just above the ground; the chamber 81 and the tubular part 78 are longer so that, in operation, water pressure raises the spray head above ground level. When inoperative, each head is housed in a cup carried from the main body of the device and a disc carried by the head provides a cover for the cup.
