Abstract
889,634. Thermal and partly magnetic switches. RHEOSTATIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 10, 1960 [March 2, 1959], No. 7229/59. Class 38 (5). A bimetal strip 15 is supported on a base 6 by means of a spring strip 16 and carries at its free end a twin armature 13, 14 co-operating with a permanent magnet 12 adjustably mounted on the base 6. An insulating member 18 depends from the free end of strip 15 and has a slot 19 for engagement with the end 20 of a switch blade 1 mounted on base 6 by a tongue 5. Blade 1 carries contacts 3, 4 for alternate engagement with contacts 9, 10 suitably carried on the base 6. Armature 13 is normally closer to magnet 12 than armature 14 and the strip 15 is thereby held down such that member 18 rests on the end 20 of the blade 1 and contact 3 is held against contact 9. A screw 11 serves to adjust this initial contact pressure. When heated strip 15 moves upwardly until armature 14 is closer to magnet 12 than armature 13, whereupon strip 15 snaps into its upper position and, after slight lostmotion due to slot 19, the blade 1 is snapped to bring contact 4 into engagement with contact 10. The switch differential is adjustable by a screw 17 which controls the total gap between the armatures 13 and 14. A knob 22, controlling pressure on a rigid tongue 33 riveted to strip 15, serves to set the operating temperature. The bimetal strip 15 may be replaced by a resilient strip and operation effected by a mechanical or thermal element, such as a rod and tube or bellows or diaphragm, acting on the tongue 33 in place of control 22. Alternatively the resilient strip 15 may be pivoted intermediate its ends and operated mechanically.
