[Also in Group XIII] In an apparatus for directly heating liquids by blowing into them a vapour or gas, e.g. steam, the liquid, e.g. milk, cream, fruit juice is passed through a channel 1 defined by a number of elements 2 lying side by side within a housing 7 through which steam is passed before being blown into the channel 1 through grooves 6 on one or both contact surfaces of the elements 2 which are arranged in a plane parallel to or including the central axis of the channel 1 so that a rotational movement is imparted to the liquid passing through it. The grooves 6 may be of different sizes and preferably widen towards their openings into the channel 1. The ends of the elements 2 (Figs. 1 and 2) may have tapered ends clamped by sleeves 4, 5 which are held in position by nuts 8. A side pipe 11 admits steam under pressure into the housing 7 whilst the liquid to be heated thereby is passed through holes 15 in a disc 14 set in an aperture 12 of the sleeve 4. In an alternative form of apparatus (Fig. 5), the elements are in the form of lamellµ 18 having grooves 24 and clamped together by plates 19, 20 and screws 21. Specification 836,144 is referred to.
