Abstract

888,677. Magnetic holding devices. PICKERX-RAY CORPORATION WAITE MANUFACTURING DIVISION Inc. July 15, 1960 [July 17, 1959], No. 24789/60. Class 35. [Also in Group XX] A radiant energy source is housed in a head having a passage through which the energy can emerge, and to the head is secured, by magnetic means, a cone having another passage aligned with the first, the cone acting as a collimator. As shown, the head 11 has a beam passage 16 communicating with the interior where the radioactive material is located. A cone 15 having a square passage fits into the head 11, stepped frusto-conical surfaces 18, 19, 20 on the one engaging against similar surfaces 22, 24, 23 on the other, so bringing the two passages into alignment. The head carries a shield 27 enclosing a plastic ring 25 in which are embedded a number of permanent magnets 26. The cone carries an armature 28 of magnetic material, so that the force between this armature and the magnets holds the cone firmly in position. The cone is dislodged for removal by turning a lever arm 48, which causes a cam finger 58 to push the armature away from the magnets, as shown in Fig. 4. Any of a set of interchangeable cones having collimating passages of different sizes can thus be readily attached to the head.
