In a pipe joint in which the end of the pipe is formed by upsetting, into a large cone which is forced against a conical socket by a cap nut 14, the part of the pipe engaged by the cap nut is formed as a surface of revolution 11 and the upsetting fold 12 in the interior surface is located away from the small diameter part of surface 11. The surface 11 may be convex or concave.
