Abstract

887,995. Variable-speed epicyclic gears. BASSEREAU, R. J. J. Dec. 29, 1959 [Jan. 6, 1959], No. 44097/59. Class 80 (2). A continuously-variable epicyclic gear comprises planet pinions 14, 15 driven at variable circumferential speed by a radially slotted disc 18, the centre of which may be displaced by a control-rod 25. The driving-shaft 22 is connected to disc 18 by spur pinions 23, 24 carried by a plate 20, and the driven shaft 1 may be connected to an annulus 4 meshing with the pinions 14, or to a sun-wheel 6 meshing with the pinions 15, by clutch dogs 8, 7 engageable by pins on an axially movable shaft 11. Pinions 14 are carried on spindles 12 in bearing-members 5, the remote ends of the spindles carrying pinions 17 connected by ratchet pawls to members 5 for one-way drive. Pinions 14, 15 may be coupled together by clutch-plates 16 operated by a wedge block 26. With shaft 1 coupled to annulus 4 the speed of the output will increase progressively with eccentric displacement of disc 18, but with shaft 1 coupled to sun-wheel 6 progressive forward or reverse drive may be obtained according to the extent and direction of displacement of disc 18.
