In a method of perforating paper or the like 2 containing resin-like material in which the paper is fed into contact with a roller 4 provided with studs or the like 6, the perforations being formed by means of one or more tools 8 having ribs or the like 9 which work upon those portions of the paper which lie upon the end surfaces 13 of the studs, such a clearance is maintained between the working surfaces of the ribs 9 and the peripheral surfaces of the studs that resinlike coatings 14, 15, Fig. 3, are formed on the working surfaces of the ribs 9 and on the peripheral surfaces of the studs. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a stand 16, Fig. 4, in which the roller 4 is rotatably mounted, the stand having pivoted thereto a cradle 20 on which is slidably mounted a carriage 21 in which the tool 8 is rotatably mounted, the clearance between the roller 4 and tool 8 being adjustable by means of a screw-and-nut 23. If the clearance is above or below a certain range, the tool is moved into the dotted line position by means of a pneumatic cylinder 28, the piston 29 of which is pivotally connected to the cradle 20. The cylinder 28 is connected electrically to an adjusting member 31 in turn guided by a member 32 which is connected to a measuring device 35 from which extends a pipe 37 terminating in a nozzle 39 arranged closely adjacent the surface 40 of the tool 8. The device 35 converts air pressure in the pipe 37 into electrical impulses. The member 32 is also actuated by a photoelectric device 33 if the paper breaks or if the supply thereof is exhausted.
