Abstract

S -caprolactams are prepared by heating a 6-hydroxycaproamide of general formula HO-(CR2)5.CONHR, wherein R represents hydrogen or alkyl groups having up to 8 carbon atoms, in water at between 300 DEG C. and 475 DEG C., at superatmospheric pressure. The process may be continuous and the products are removed by conventional methods, e.g. extraction with chloroform. Compounds in which the total carbon atoms in the alkyl groups does not exceed 12 are preferred and such compounds are listed. Examples describe the use of 6-hydroxycaproamide, N-methyl, 3-methyl, and 3,5-dimethyl-6 hydroxycaproamides, to prepare the corresponding S -caprolactams.
