Abstract

Silica is prepared by reacting together silane and carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, or water vapour. A mixture of SiH4 and CO2, N2O, or H2O diluted with A is passed into a decomposition chamber, as described in Specification 826,575, containing a body of carbon heated to 800 DEG C. by an induction coil, which is gradually withdrawn as the SiO2 is deposited. The mixture of silane A and H2O may be passed, in an alternative, past a voltage anti-node in a high frequency transmission line, as described in Specification 885,117, when the H2 formed is dissociated to the monoatomic form and the heat of reassociation melts the SiO2 produced which is sprayed on to a substrate.
