Abstract

Uranium dioxide is prepared by reducing uranium trioxide with natural gas at an elevated temperature suitably in the range of 400 DEG to 500 DEG C. By natural gas is meant a gas consisting essentially of methane. According to an example a flask was swept clear of air by a stream of dried nitrogen, a charge of uranium trioxide was placed in the flask and the charge subjected to a stream of natural gas at 450 DEG C. for one hour whereby uranium dioxide was formed. The uranium dioxide formed by the process is highly reactive with ordinary air at room temperature and must be maintained in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide or a vacuum. The uranium dioxide is particularly suitable for the production of uranium tetrachloride by chlorination with carbon tetrachloride as described in Specification 812,121.
