Abstract

In a process for the suspension polymerization of vinyl chloride, at a pH of 7,5 to 12 in the presence of a polymerization catalyst which is soluble in the organic phase and a dispersing agent, there is used as an auxiliary dispersing agent a water-soluble alkali metal or ammonium salt of the cetyl semi-ester of phthalic, isophthalic, or terephthalic acid. Polymerization catalysts mentioned are benzoyl and lauroyl peroxides, organic hydroperoxides and aliphatic azo compounds. Dispersing agents mentioned are polyvinyl alcohol, gelatine, water-soluble cellulose ethers, e.g. methyl cellulose, salts of styrene/maleic anhydride copolymers, and insoluble inorganic suspension stabilizers such as barium sulphate, calcium phosphate, aluminium oxide and talc. In the example, the pH value is adjusted to 8 by the addition of ammonia. The products are spherical particles of porous structure which readily absorb plasticizers.
