884,604. Agglutinated fibrous materials; laminates; coated non-woven fabrics. BALATUM N.V. April 15, 1959 [May 13, 1958], No. 12864/59. Class 140. A process for the manufacture of a material resembling leather comprises impregnating a non-woven textile material as hereinafter defined, with a dispersion of a gelatinizable, thermoplastic artificial resin in one or more plasticizers, the dispersion then being gelatinized by heating. The term non-woven textile material denotes a non-woven mat of fibres wherein the fibres are connected to each other with a binding agent. The binder may exhibit a high adhesion to the fibres as well as to the artificial resin. Specified fibres are rayon and nylon. Specified binders are acrylonitrile rubber and butadiene-acrylonitride rubber. Specified artificial resin dispersions comprise polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride-acetate, dioctyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate and white spirit. Gelatinization may be carried out by heating in a radiation channel. The impregnated material may be coated with a second dispersion of a gelatinizable thermoplastic artificial resin which is then gelatinized. The second dispersion may be pigmented and may be coated on to the impregnated material before the first dispersion has been gelatinized or when it has been partially glutinized. The impregnated material may be laminated with a foil of an artificial resin (e.g. plasticized polyvinyl chloride). Two or more impregnated webs may be combined by pressing together before, during or after gelatinization.
