Abstract
1,237,397. Cellular laminates. DUNLOP HOLDINGS Ltd. 15 April, 1969 [16 April, 1968], No. 17759/68. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B2] Flexible sheet material comprises a compressed reticular or reticulated cellular plastics sheet adhered to a non-woven textile web having knitted or woven fabric incorporated in the web body. The web may comprise a layer of staple fibres or crimped continuous filaments needlepunched to each face of a knitted or woven fabric, or a single layer of staple fibres or crimped continuous filaments needlepunched partially through a knitted or woven fabric. Woven fabrics may be scrim, matt-woven or basketwoven. The cellular sheet may consist of natural or synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, or, especially polyurethane, crimped or uncrimped fibres of polyester, polyamide, cotton, wool or rayon may be incorporated in the cellular sheet, either by distributing in a foamable mixture or by vibrating into the cells of the formed foam. The cellular sheet may be compressed under heat and pressure, optionally after impregnation with adhesive to assist retention in compressed form; although such a method is preferably not used. Compression of the sheet may be effected before, during or after bonding to the textile web, and the compressed cellular sheet may have a density of 0À3-1À05 gm./cm.<SP>3</SP>. The sheets may be compressed and bonded by temperature and pressure; pressure may be applied by plates or rollers. A temperature differential may exist between the surfaces during bonding. An adhesive may be additionally used for bonding; specified adhesives are natural rubber latex, polychloroprene latex, natural rubber-polymethylmethacrylate graft copolymer latex, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, solvent-based neoprene, polyurethane, carboxylated styrene -butadiene copolymer latex, and styrene-butadiene copolymer latex mixed with phenol/aldehyde resin. Alternatively, the surfaces of the sheets may be rendered adhesive by solvent- or heat-treatment; the cellular sheet may be bonded in a tacky state. The sheets may also be needled together. Other specified methods of bonding are (a) by the application of binder to superimposed sheets, setting and curing (if the cellular sheet is precompressed and of density less than 0À85 gm./cm.<SP>3</SP>); the binder being optionally differentially distributed, and (b) by flame-bonding, using an interposed cellular plastics sheet. Binder may be applied to the adhered assembly, application being to the fibrous material only if the cellular sheet has a density greater than 0À85 gm./cm.<SP>3</SP>. Specified binders are polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, ethylenevinyl acetate copolymer, butadiene-styrene and butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers; they may be compounded with silicone oil. A finish coating of nylon, polyacrylate or polyurethane may be applied. The surface may be embossed.
