Abstract

884,591. Sawing. VOUCHER Ltd., COOPER, C., and KENCH, E. R. Feb. 11, 1960 [Feb.18, 1959], No. 5558/59. Class 145. Rod or tubular stock 42 gripped between jaws 37, 38 is cut by a pair of co-planar circular saws 13, 14 on head stocks 11, 12, both saws being advanced inwardly until they are almost touching and then one saw being withdrawn while the other continues until the two coplanar cuts are joined. The saws are driven by belts and gearing from electric motors 21 mounted on brackets 22 which are adjustable by screws 36 to maintain the belt tension and the head stocks are advanced by hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders 23, 24 against the action of compression springs. A bar 29 slidable in fixtures 27, 28 on the head stock carries a stop 30 which, before the blades touch, depresses the plunger of a valve 32 so that the pressure in the cylinder 23 is relieved and the head stroke 11 is withdrawn by the spring in the cylinder. When the cutting-off operation is completed, a further valve releases the pressure in the cylinder 24 and the head stock 12 is withdrawn. To ensure that the blades do not touch a switch or valve or a stop bar 34, adjustable for length by a screw 35, is provided in the path of both head stocks or additional trip switches or valves are provided. The upper gripping jaw 37 is movable by a fluidpressure cylinder 47 connected by a lever to one of several holes in the upper part of the jaw and the lower jaw 38 has arms 50 adjusted to the curvature of the stock by bars 51.. The stock may be advanced by hand or by an automatically-operated fluid-pressure cylinder.
