The inner push-pull member of a Bowdentype mechanism comprises an inner tension cable 51 and an outer compression sleeve 52 consisting of a series of interfitting members 56 which slide over the inner surface of a guide tube 53. Terminal bushings 54, 55 are secured to the cable 51 and a screw and nut assembly 67, 66 is provided between one bushing 55 and the series of members 56 to maintain pre-tension between the cable 51 and the sleeve 52 which is obtained by pre-loading the cable and sleeve whilst permitting freedom of rotation of the cable relative to the sleeve and then securing them together at the ends as by the terminal bushings 54, 55. A jig device for applying pretension to the cable is also described, the end terminals then being secured thereto by swaging.
