Abstract
949,844. Inductors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 7, 1961 [July 8, 1960], No. 23963/60. Heading HIT. [Also in Division G1] A cylindrical coil former having a helical conductive path has an adjustable stressing means capable of applying to the former a longitudinal stress either compressive or tensile so as to correct any pitch error evenly distributed along the helical path. In Fig. 1, the grooves 4 for the conductor are deliberately machined so that the actual pitch exceeds the required pitch and the tubular former 1 is compressed to the required extent by tightening nuts 8, 9 on a rod 7. Alternatively, the pitch of the grooves 4 (Fig. 2) may be machined so that the actual pitch is less than the required pitch and the tubular former 1 is internally threaded at each end to engage bolts 12. The former is stretched by turning one or both bolts so as to compress a spacer 11 within the former. Other embodiments (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) describe a means of tensioning or compressing a tubular former wherein the helical conductor path is on the inner periphery of the former. The conductive path may be conductive wire or strip secured by partially embedding in the machined grooves or may be a printed circuit. The application to position sensing transformers, where accurately dimensioned pitches of the associated windings are important; is suggested. Specification 948,070 is referred to.
