Abstract
883,614. Pedal mechanism for motor driven bicycles. INDENOR INDUSTRIELLE DE L'EST ET DU NORD. June 27, 1960 [July 30, 1959], No. 22463/60. Class 136(2). A pedal mechanism has its crank-supporting spindle 1 combined with a self-operating resilient device which enables the rotation of the spindle to be arrested when the driver leaves the pedals and permits pedalling to be instantaneously resumed when required. The resilient device R may comprise a hairpinspring with inwardly turned ends 3, 3a. The spring is mounted on a bracket 5 fixed to the spindle bearing 4 on the cycle frame (Fig. 1, not shown). The arm-ends 3, 3a cooperate with flats 2 with ends relieved at 6 on the end of the crank spindle 1. When the pedals are relinquished vibration. causes them to turn until the flats 2 are gripped by the arm-ends which hold the spindle with the cranks 7 in the horizontal position. Pressure on the pedals is sufficient to disengage the arms when required. A ball and notch or a spring-pin are mentioned as alternatives to the hairpin-spring.
