Abstract
883,573 Boring earth &c. PITCHER, J. N. Aug. 30, 1960, No. 29918/60. Class 85. A core drill comprises an outer tube 3 having at one end a cutter 5, an inner corereceiving tube 1 reciprocable through the cutter end of the outer tube, yieldable means 47 within the outer tube resisting inward movement of the inner tube, and means 45 releasably securing the inner tube to the member 41 supporting it within the outer tube. When lowering into the well the tube 1 is extended, water being supplied through a pipe 13, passageways 14, 15 and a vent tube 36 to wash loose material from the bottom of the hole. After the tube 1 engages the bottom of' the hole the tube 36 enters a tube 31 mounted on bearings 23 within the tube 3. Since the lower end of the tube 1 is in contact with the ground the water from the passageways passes to an annulus 15 through flutes 48, Fig. 2 (not shown), in the tube 3, and member 41 respectively to the cutter. When the tube 1 is filled and the drill is withdrawn the water is vented through tube 31 and passages 18.
