Abstract
A surface composition comprising an epoxy resin fluid at room temperature, a hardener therefor and a granular mineral filling material, is applied to surfaces such as floors, roofs, streets and walls, and allowed to harden. The viscosity of the epoxy resin is preferably less than 50,000 centipoises at 20 DEG C., the proportion used being related to the viscosity according to a given formula. The epoxy resins may be the reaction products of polyhydroxyl or polycarboxyl compounds with epichlorhydrin or glycerol dichlorhydrin; reactive diluents such as butyl or cresyl glycidyl ether and plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, aliphatic dithiols or condensation products of dimeric fatty acids and alkylene polyamines may be added. The hardener may comprise an aliphatic polyamine or an aromatic or heterocyclic base. The mineral filler may be sand of a grain size between 0,06 and 1,5 mm., but pigments, fluorescent compounds, glass beads or powder, broken stone, cork, sawdust or textile fibres and materials for producing thixotropic properties such as silicon dioxide or bentonite may be included. Cement, concrete, plaster, wood, asphalt, metal or stone supports may be coated with the compositions by spreading, as with a trowel. The hardening period may be shortened by heating.ALSO:A surfacing composition comprises an epoxy resin fluid at room temperature, a hardener therefor, and a granular mineral filling material, preferably sand. The viscosity of the epoxy resin is preferably less than 50,000 centipoises at 20 DEG C., the proportion used being related to the viscosity according to a given formula. The epoxy resins may be the reaction products of polyhydroxyl or polycarboxyl compounds with epichlorhydrin or glycerol dichlorhydrin; reactive diluents such as butyl or cresyl glycidyl ether, and plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, aliphatic dithiols or condensation products of dimeric fatty acids and alkylene polyamines may be added. The hardener may comprise specified aliphatic polyamines and aromatic or heterocyclic amine bases. In Examples (1) and (2) a fluid epoxy resin obtained by condensation of epichlorhydrin with 4:41 dihydroxy-diphenyldimethyl methane are mixed with dibutyl phthalate and coarse quartz sand; triethylene tetramine is then added. In Example (3) a polyglycidyl mixture obtained by alkaline condensation of epichlorhydrin with phthalic acid is mixed with quartz sand and triethylene tetramine. Uses. Coating floors, roofs, streets and walls (see Group III); embedding.
