Abstract

882,791. Clutch control. EDDY, W. C. Sept. 1, 1959, No. 29819/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXII] A torque responsive control arrangement reverses the direction of rotation of the tool of a machine tool upon overload, which is driven by a reversible pneumatic motor 12. On the occurrence of overload an electric circuit is completed to reverse a valve 132 controlling the supply and exhaust of air to the motor 12. At the same time a solenoid operated valve 72 is actuated to open the cylinder of a clutchoperating piston 60 to exhaust so that a friction clutch 30, 32 in the drive to a chuck 14 is disengaged by a spring 54. A time-delay relay subsequently opens the circuit to the valve 72 so that air pressure is applied to the piston 60 to re-engage the clutch so that the chuck is driven in reverse. The driven plate 30 of the clutch is connected by a spring 110, which yields on overload, to a shaft 34 driving the chuck. When the spring yields a contact arm 118 fast with the clutch plate 30 engages a contact 119 or 120 adjustably mounted on the shaft 34 to complete the electric circuit. Adjustment of contacts 119, 120 varies the maximum torque transmittable. As described, the mechanism is applied to a tapping machine and the shaft 34 drives the chuck through a pin-and-slot connection, allowing axial movement of the chuck so that the tapping die can feed itself on to the work. Limit switches are included in the electric circuit for reversing the motor at the ends of the stroke of the chuck.
