882,657. Electromagnets. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. April 17, 1959 [April 19, 1958], No. 13198/59. Class 35. [Also in Group XXIV] In an electromagnetic multi-disc friction clutch of the stationary magnet type the polepiece 1 is of U-shaped cross-section and encloses the energizing coil 2 and a flux guide ring 6, both of trapezoidal section, the axial width of the latter being less at the outer than at the inner periphery, so that the radial flux density is substantially constant, the ring 6 having a non-magnetic annular core insert 7 of axially tapering sections and the discs 8 being formed with radially-corresponding non-magnetic annular zones 9. The internal plate-carrying sleeve 10 has an inner portion 11 of non- magnetic material and formed with a flange 12 to prevent flux leakage. In modifications, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the cross-section of member 7 is of stepped form.
